ABB to invest around USD$6m to establish a local Traction Center of Excellence, featuring a traction converter, traction motor and traction battery assembly and service center in Fraser Coast.
ABB has been awarded from Stadler Valencia orders worth $170 million to power more than 300 new trains and locomotives with highly energy-efficient traction technologies. They will be used in different European railway networks to modernize and reinforce train transportation in countries such as Spain, Portugal, UK, Germany or Austria, as well as in some European railway corridors.
ABB today announced it will acquire the PowerTech Converter (PTC) business, a leading supplier of auxiliary power converter solutions for light rail vehicles and metros. The acquisition is an important part of ABB Motion’s external growth strategy.
ABB has won orders worth around $80 million from Stadler for energy-efficient traction and high-performance battery technologies for high-capacity commuter trains. Many of these trains will strengthen the short-distance transportation network in Spain serving more than one million commuters every day in some of Spain’s largest cities such as Madrid and Barcelona. The orders also include traction equipment for new locomotives.
ABB has won a large order from German railway company Deutsche Bahn for the upgrade of its first flagship InterCity Express (ICE 1) high-speed train series. The contract is part of a refurbishment program and includes the upgrade of 76 high-speed locomotives to ABB’s highly energy efficient IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) traction converters.
