The East West Rail (EWR) Alliance, consisting of Atkins, Laing O’Rourke, VolkerRail and Network Rail, has brought Network Rail’s long welded rail train (LWRT) out of retirement, to help deliver one of the largest rail infrastructure projects in the UK.
In July, the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) East Alliance installed the first miles of new electric overhead wires on a mainline in Yorkshire for over 25 years, marking a step-change in progress for the multi-billion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade.
Significant planting and landscaping enhancements have now started on the Hope Valley Railway Upgrade, a Network Rail project being delivered by the VolkerRailStory joint venture, that will see new railway infrastructure and track built to enable faster and more reliable passenger journeys between Manchester and Sheffield.
The East West Rail Alliance received high praise at the prestigious Rail Business Awards 2022, having been recognised for the successful dismantling and rebuild of Bletchley Flyover, whilst putting the passenger first.
VolkerRail is working with sister company, VolkerFitzpatrick, to install all overhead line (OLE) equipment at the Tyne and Wear Metro’s Gosforth fleet depot.
